Upcoming Pilgrimages

October 2024 information
coming soon

Assisi, Italy

We will be staying in the hilltop town of Assisi with restaurants, shops, multiple churches, significant Franciscan sites and beautiful original artwork all within walking distance.

Early morning stillness, surrounded by beauty invites a contemplative stance.

Traversing through the town on cobblestone streets with ancient stonework architecture is like stepping back in time.

Mystical evenings will leave us with a deep sense of gratitude.

The Basilica of St. Clare overlooking the valley is captivating day and night, inside and out

Assisi is a hilltop village with many points of interest at both the top, bottom and sides of the village. We will be walking up and down the hills of Assisi and the surrounding areas daily. Please remember to bring comfortable walking shoes.

The food, the wine and the outstanding gelato in Assisi all add so much to the experience. As our previous pilgrims can attest to, we will be stopping for gelato as often as possible!

In the words of my friend and mystical teacher, James Finley from The Living School for Action and Contemplation “we are inviting you to assume an inner stance that offers the least resistance of being overcome by grace”.

Reflections on Past Visits

October 2019

Assisi, Italy

2019 was a pilgrimage filled with many precious moments, flexibility, a deep sense of peace, gratitude and joy. Our group was dynamic, fun, faith filled, reflective and extremely open. Thank you all for an incredible pilgrimage. We are grateful for each of you!

There were a few unexpected changes in 2019 that everyone understood with compassion and grace. One of our guides/drivers was suddenly ill and the pilgrimage site of Montecasale was closed for a year. Our local driver and friend agreed to be our replacement driver for that day and we went to explore Cortona instead. While there we visited the Convent de Le Celle and the Santa Margherita Church named after a Franciscan Third Order woman. We also saw the home that was restored from the book “Under the Tuscan Sun” in Cortona. Timing had it that Frances Mayes, the author was outside her home and delighted to see us. We also found the best cappuccino I’ve ever had.

We had no idea how much we would all draw on this pilgrimage and Assisi during the upcoming pandemic. Many of our pilgrims have contacted us, from all our trips, to tell us that the peace they experienced in Assisi was an incredible gift that they relived  during the times of stress that they have encountered in the last two and a half years.

Ken and I lost seven friends and family members in 11 months during the lock down time of the pandemic. Often what got me through a rough day was picturing myself back in Assisi, walking to the Basilica, Cathedrals and churches drawing on the wisdom and strength of St. Francis and St. Clare.

Assisi is the gift that keeps on giving.

May 2018

Assisi, Italy

May in Italy is glorious. In 2018 we had a small group of four strong, very faithfilled women. Our time together was quiet and reflective. A time filled with growth that deepened into grace filled moments. We all came to trust that our time together was meant to be.

This group loved Assisi so much that I cancelled numerous day trips for them so they could take in as much of Assisi as possible.

They even found out that there is an Anglican Order of Franciscans. I love it when our pilgrims teach us!

October 2017

Assisi, Italy

“Our pilgrimage in 2017 was a mystical, magical pilgrimage that is never to be forgotten” these are the words our beautiful friend Joanna shared with me October 25th, 2022, five years later. This speaks to me of the connection we carry in our hearts. We haven’t seen each other since the pilgrimage, other than virtually but we do stay in touch, support and pray for one another.

2017 was a year of incredible people who all embraced each other as trustworthy from the moment we gathered. If we had experienced anything traumatic we were well covered emotionally, physically and spiritually. We had two Doctors, two Nurses, a Therapist, a Deacon and a Spiritual Director with us. We also had a group of mothers and fathers who knew how to serve and love, very well.

Two of my dearest friends, for over 20 years, Nadine and Carole joined us for this pilgrimage which still touches me to the core.

Ken and I enjoy the peace of Assisi so much that after this pilgrimage we rented an apartment with two rooms for 10 days additional days.  Nadine embraced our invitation to stay with us for a few  extra days as she too wanted to be in Assisi longer. It was such a gift!

I was invited to facilitate a retreat in Expressive Art for two days in New Mexico for The Living School in January, 2017. This is where I met Manny and Pamela. They heard about Assisi from Joanna who was also on the retreat and already registered for our pilgrimage this year. In no time at all both Manny and Pam registered for our pilgrimage and brought their amazing spouses. The wisdom and vulnerability the four of them offered was incredible.

Regina and I met at a Spiritual Directors conference in New Mexico and it was an instant friendship. We met again in Toronto on another Spiritual Directors conference, this time both of our husbands were with us and they quickly became inseparable. It always amazes me how in a group of over 600 people we came together.

Peggy and Patti are both incredible women who are members of our parish. Our lives are richer because of these two and their spouses who did not attend the pilgrimage but join us around our dining room table for reunions.

Why do I share this with you? It’s because the people we meet on pilgrimage are typically seeking a deeper connection to God. This unites us. We all believe that we were meant to be together in Assisi. We still gather virtually to touch base, support and love each other. The connections in this group are incredible because everyone wants to be connected.

If you are feeling drawn to join us, trust the invitation. You never know who you will meet.

May 2016

Assisi, Italy

Support and encouragement from numerous people has been an enormous gift to the birthing of these pilgrimages.Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. It’s been a gift to us, our pilgrims and the people in Italy who so lovingly serve our groups.

I was in New Mexico attending our third and final Living School symposium with 180 students from around the world and our teachers Father Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault and James Finely. As a part of our completion for the course we had a final project to present. It was to contain the teachings of contemplation, be of service and use our gifts and talents.

Through discernment, prayer and support of our teachers, my Spiritual Director, John Griffith and Ken my husband, I created a proposal for a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy.

When I turned the corner at the hotel that weekend in New Mexico, there was Judith, a fellow student with her arms open wide for a hug, a huge smile asking me “When’s Assisi. How many people do we need?” I told her, “we need one, one person is all we need.” She said “You have one.” The rest is history. It’s incredible what one yes can do. Thank you for your yes Judith! That’s Judith with me under the Carla sign. Her joy is palpable!

This year we had a number of people with only smart phones, by the end of the pilgrimage they all knew how to use their phones cameras. Joanne had just gotten her phone a few weeks before we left Calgary because we promised her we would teach her to use it. She was in her 80’s and more than eager to learn.

There was an overall desire in our group of women to find a field of poppies in our travels. On our day trip to Spello our driver drove by a gorgeous red field and everyone started shouting “Oh, poppies.” He loved our excitement and said “on the way back to Assisi we will stop in that field.” True to his word he brought us back to the poppies, the light was soft and we were all thrilled to spend time photographing them. You can see Teresa in the white hat surrounded by gorgeous red poppies.

Our drivers and guides understand us now. At first they wanted to get us to places quickly, to tour quickly and for us to follow quickly. One of them told me “Delores, your people don’t know how to follow.” I laughingly said, ” We are a contemplative group and we are here for ten days. We are not in a rush.” I then told him about our Contemplative Photography process. After a few minutes I saw him pointing out the small details to a few of our pilgrims. Even our Italian guides have slowed down. We invite them to eat with us, to pray with us, to have a drink with us and to create art with us if they want to. They are an amazing addition to our experience.

October 2013

Assisi, Italy

2013 was a year of invitation, listening, trusting and seeking. For months, before this trip, I kept feeling like I was to go to Assisi to be there to experience and photograph Pope Francis’ first visit to Assisi. My husband, Ken was unable to go due to work commitments. We discussed it again 10 days before Pope Francis was to be there for the Feast of St. Francis. The deep desire would not leave me alone.

After prayer and reflection, my husband said “I think you should go to Assisi. Margo might go with you.” That’s Margo in the red shirt holding the Papal Flags in Assisi.

I planned our trip in a couple of days. We got the best flight prices we have ever had, we were only a few feet away from Pope Francis as he gave us a blessing, and I found a private driver to take us to the many places I want to photograph that were important in the life of St. Francis. Little did I know that after visiting and photographing all of these places, they were to be our pilgrimage sites in two and a half years.

Testimonials

june 2012

Assisi, Italy

This was our first year to travel to Italy. We had waited many years to finally fulfill this dream. Little did we know that we would return a few years later leading pilgrimages. God’s plan are so much greater than ours have ever been.

Our original plan was to go to Assisi only as a day trip. I felt we were being invited to stay for a night. Ken was open to it, so we adjusted our plans.

We spent one night in Assisi with our two teen aged sons, Zac and Nicholas and a friend of Zac’s. We were walking in the forest where St. Francis walked and prayed on Mount Subasio. I was watching Zac and thinking he was bored. I asked him “Are you bored?” He said “No, not at all. I wish I could stay here forever, away from all the pressures of the world.” I was overcome with emotion. I knew him so well and yet I had no idea what he was experiencing. This reminds me, often, to never assume to know what someone is thinking.

While in Assisi we were on a tour of the Basilica and the town. There was a young priest and his parents in our group. After the tour he invited us to a private mass he was celebrating later that day in a small convent chapel in Assisi.

On the way to the mass, after being in the forest where St. Francis prayed and meditated, our sons asked me, “Who do you think he’s going to ask to do a reading? I said ” I have no idea.” to which they responded unanimously “He’s going to ask you.” I said “No, he’s not.” and I truly believed he wasn’t going to.

We walked into the church and he approached me with a missal asking me “Will you please do a reading?” Again I was emotional. Our sons are so wise.

My question after this experience, for years, was “Why did you want my voice heard in Assisi?” My spiritual Director, John  journeyed with me on this question. I journaled with the question and created Expressive Arts pieces around this question.

Right before we left for Assisi, I had filled out the application for the first intake of The Living School with Father Richard Rohr. I had no expectation that I was going to be accepted, I was simply listening to the nudge. The discernment process for the intake of students was happening while we were in Italy. I was invited into the program a few weeks later. Over 1500 people applied and I was one of 180 invited to attend. The gentle nudge of God certainly takes us on interesting journeys.

The weaving of all of this to create pilgrimages and teach is not of my doing, there was no business plan, no plan saying in four years I am going to lead pilgrimages in Italy. God has  gently been inviting me to step.  I’m simply trying to be attentive and keep up.
